Hear from our Legal Awareness Training Course Participant Heyam

Heyam Elyas Qasim 28 years Chamishko Camp, Duhok (Internally Displaced Person) “Losing everything in the blink of a second makes you more aware of learning about your rights. Legal Awareness Course at the Center enabled me to understand that one must learn the law that is intended to protect you, for you to be able to use it to empower your life.” Heyam had a very good life in Sinjar and lived with a doting father. However, one year after the ISIS attacked, the stress being a constant factor impacted his health and he passed away. Her brothers all got married lived separately, while Heyam graduated from the department of History and was struggling to find a job. She became a volunteer with UNHCR for 2 years and played the role for a community mobilizer. It was here she felt she needed information on the legal rights available to women and decided to enroll for the course at the Center. The Course helped her gain important and valuable information, as the issue of women’s rights violation is very common in her community. She is more equipped and understands the law better to be able to help women and solve their problems. She learnt about the rights granted by law to women, her right to divorce, to drive a car and have her own income and her ability to ask for those rights from the government. She feels her father would be proud of who she has become today.
